Siding is the weather barrier for everything behind it. When it fails, water reaches the house wrap, then the sheathing, then the framing. By the time a homeowner notices, the repair has usually grown well past the panels themselves.
1. Cracks, splits and holes
Vinyl becomes brittle with age and UV exposure, and a hailstone that would have bounced off a five-year-old panel will punch straight through a twenty-year-old one. Any crack is a direct path for water to reach the sheathing.
2. Warping, buckling or loose panels
Panels that wave, bulge or rattle in the wind have usually lost their fastening or expanded past their tolerance. Push gently on a warped section — if it feels soft, or if the sheathing behind gives, there is moisture damage underneath.
3. Severe fading and chalking
Rub a hand across a south-facing wall. If it comes away with a white powdery residue, the surface layer is breaking down. That is not cosmetic — a chalking panel has lost its weather resistance along with its colour.
4. Rising heating bills
Failed siding usually means failed house wrap behind it. Air infiltration through the wall assembly is one of the biggest contributors to a house that never quite feels warm in January, no matter what the thermostat says.
5. Interior paint or wallpaper peeling
This one surprises people. Moisture moving through a compromised wall assembly shows up inside as bubbling paint, peeling wallpaper or a stain that keeps returning after you paint over it.
6. Mould, mildew or moss at the seams
Organic growth concentrated along panel joints indicates water sitting where it should be shedding. Occasional growth on a shaded north wall is normal; growth following the seam lines is not.
7. Soft or rotted trim, soffit and fascia
Trim fails first because it takes the most direct water exposure. Soft fascia is both a problem in itself and a reliable indicator that the siding above it has been letting water through for a while.
Repair or replace?
Isolated damage on siding that is still manufactured can usually be repaired with a matched panel. The difficulty is matching: colours drift over twenty years of sun exposure, and discontinued profiles cannot be matched at all.
When damage spans multiple elevations, or when the underlying house wrap has failed, replacing the whole envelope is the honest answer. It costs more up front and it stops the problem permanently.
